Job description - Machinist Supervisor

Summary of Position:

Supervise machinists involved in manual and CNC machining. Must be skillful in the use of a variety of metal machining tools and precision measuring devices to cut, grind, machine, or otherwise shape metal and plastic parts into conformance with specified dimensions. The employee is required to understand and interpret blueprints, sketches, or other descriptions of parts to be machined, and to select materials and plan the sequence of operations to be performed by staff in accordance with accepted methods and standards of the machinist trade. The work requires knowledge of supervisory techniques, personnel policies, and procedures.

General Supervisor Duties:

  • Assist management with managerial duties and responsibilities regarding your department.
  • Assist management in both the hiring of new team members and handling of disciplinary action forms for your department.
  • Assist in the yearly evaluation of all department team members.
  • Continually train, delegate training, and cross-train all department team members.
  • Delegate job tasks and duties throughout your department.
  • Regulate and inspect the cleanup of all your department areas.
  • Supervises the upkeep of a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations in the safe disposal of all garbage, cardboard, scrap wood, chemicals and fluids.
  • Oversee compliance with all OSHA/Safety Rules.
  • Make sure all checklists, forms, and paperwork are properly completed, filled out and signed off on before being submitted.
  • Contributes to a team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Motivate your team by leading by example, showing efficiency with their problem-solving skills and proper communication.
  • Keep awareness that all actions and words spoken are a representation of GK Machine so you conduct yourself in an appropriate manner.
  • Any other duty that may be required by the supervisor or Management.

Machinist Supervisor Duties:

  • Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Evaluate verifies employee performance through the review of completed work.
  • Estimate cost of materials to accomplish assignments.
  • Responsible for improvements on repeat jobs to make the process faster.
  • Ability to work on a wide variety of complex parts from drawings, including one-offs and hand sketches.
  • Have a working understanding of the Cartesian coordinates X, Y, Z, and Axis for all machining centers for complex parts.
  • To use skills to protect against potential damage to all machines and in particular, to take over all ownership of the machine shop, and to share expertise and knowledge throughout the machine shop and be a focal point for advice on machining operations.
  • Plan the tooling requirements for future jobs, ensuring minimum downtime.
  • Inspect parts to ensure they meet blueprint and company specifications using proper measuring instruments.
  • Setup machines on a flexible basis to ensure optimum output throughout the shop.
  • Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
  • Gathers documentation and verifies revision levels are current and match prints, as well as documenting all setup information and tooling required for each job by completing setup sheets and job logs.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to GK Machine safety procedures and regulations.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation for machinery work
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose malfunctions and determine the need for adjustments or repairs..
  • Position and fasten workpieces.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
  • Install repaired parts into equipment or install new equipment.
  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment in order to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
  • Program computers and electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools
  • Set controls to regulate machining or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information.
  • Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup and production.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes' dimensions and reference points on material or work-piece as guides for subsequent machining as necessary.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines as necessary to machine parts as required.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media according to established guidelines and procedures.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verifies conformance of finished work-piece to specifications, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify the accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Operate the Forklift in a safe manner.
  • Follow GK protocols on the proper use of cranes.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to GK Machine safety procedures and regulations.
  • Keep the work area clean at all times.
  • Complete assigned work within a given timeframe and according to specifications.
  • Inform the supervisor of parts shortages as they arise.
  • Process jobs in the correct sequence order and stage them accordingly.
  • Marks completed jobs with identification tags.
  • Step in to help any team members as the need arises.
  • Participate in training fellow employees.
  • Maintain all quality specifications according to each job.
  • Complete the checklist and forms thoroughly before turning them in.
  • Work as a Team member with all employees.
  • Communicate with team members. Good communication takes both listening and addressing one another respectfully.
  • Follow directions read from prints or that have been given verbally.
  • Use problem and troubleshooting skills to solve issues as they arise.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Required: High School diploma or GED from an accredited school system or program and a minimum of 3-5 years' experience in multi-axis manufacturing.
  • Preferred: Associates degree (A.A.) from a two-year college or technical school; five years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
